Korea... 50th Anniversary

country as flag
Three cities honored the vets of Korea yesterday,
... and Savannah was one of them.

Earnest Drummer sat in his wheelchair
clasping his hands
and moving his eyes up
and around
as the small flag tied to his chair . . . flapped
in a cool sharp breeze.

("Daddy can't walk.
... but he wanted to be here for the others ya know!")

A Medal of Honor was given to Gen. Ray Davis and
as he was introduced,
Drummer clenched his teeth,
his old hands,
and his heart .
... and with all his strength . . . he rose.

Alone . . . struggling as he had in that War!
Drummer slowly stood,
saluting those honored,
and those he fought with long ago.

Struggling to stand,
he saluted as he held himself upright at attention.

TAPS was sounding through the air
and yet unwavering he stood,
firmly saluting his comrades forgotten

Tears and joy followed him to his chair as the ceremony ended.

"I shall never forget my Brothers in Arms!" he said
Let us remember them... Those brave of 50 years ago.
The Veterans of Korea.
