Unknown Soldier

Shadowed doorways
where a soldier had
once walked through.
Those times are gone now
they, who remember
know not his name.
To this day,
he lay buried,
name unknown,
lost over the bitter years
of heartache and pain.
We know not of him,
forgotten by most,
until Memorial Day.
When, even the President
comes to say a tear-jerking hello
and the soldiers of today
walk the faded line
to watch over him.
He came home after the war,
unidentifiable,
laid to rest
in a coffin of marble.
His grave is marked
for all those who never
had the chance to come home.
He is one, left to rest,
in the tomb of the unknown.
