| The Ultimate Sacrifice |
| The ringing of explosions fills your ears. Gas clouds your vision, Contrasting with the sharp reality of death. Your meals taste like ashes and sand. Freedom isn't free.
Mothers wail. Their children lying on the roads like slaughtered deer Too bloody to identify, Some whimpering like scared puppies. You hear them even with your music turned up all the way. But you know they're supposed to be the bad guys.
Each day an eternity, You watch your child mature in Polaroids sent in the mail. You wonder if the Red Sox are winning.
You feel yourself slowly losing your humanity, No longer affected by love or sorrow or hate Only the animalistic instinct to survive, Trying not to become another white cross at the cemetery, The ultimate sacrifice. | Haley 10th Grade Copyright 2006 Listed 11/14/2006Poem "recognized for creative excellence" by School District of Lee County, Ft.
