Still
A Hero |
|
He stood
within the thousands of others,
shouldered his musket, prepared to fire,
winked at his comrades, concealing a
smile.
He was a boy, yet still a hero.
Violent crimson
staining the ground.
Smoke, strangling the air,
gunshots, explosions, the earth
trembling with dismay.
He was a soldier, yet still a hero.
Silence swept across the dusty ruins.
Darkness fell as it always does.
Human beings, alive and chattering but a
few minutes before,
now were frozen, their dying screams an
echo to last forever.
He was a man, yet still a hero.
Finally, he returned home, mingled with
his family and friends.
The puzzle was together again, yet the
picture had changed.
For this is how it goes, for those
heroes of war,
They will forever be there amongst us
Yet always alone. |
