A Soldier’s Log

The glory I had sought,
the sights I had to see,
It only could be bought,
glory did not come free.

Rumors passed that war would be easy
days and nights still come to pass.
One more step and I'll be queasy,
Captain's orders say more stepping in murk and grass.

Fighting for your life,
witnessing your friends die,
taking in the merciless strife,
breaking down to cry.

Heroic men with stories untold,
Will bring to nations a fleeting peace,
Their hearts as strong as a lion and bold,
When will the squabbling of men ever cease?

The glory I had sought,
the sights I had to see,
in the war I fought,
God, please come and save me.
