| Memories |
| Before he goes to sleep at night Thoughts creep into his head Of the time he spent in Germany And the soldiers that he led.
His mind wanders back To hearing gunshots in the night And having hope that one day soon Everything would be all right.
Though he tries not to think about it He does anyway About what happened to his best friend On that one fateful day.
He woke up to the screaming When the enemy invaded their camp He remembers it like it was yesterday The air was cold and damp.
When he heard the explosion He ran outside to see what was wrong The second he left his tent He knew his best friend was gone.
Like a memory that plays over and over Like a film inside his head Tears start streaming down his face Then drip onto the bed
He wonders what would have happened If they hadn't been there If they had been too scared to go Or if they just didn't care.
Where would we be now? What would have happened then? Despite the horrors he witnessed He knows he would do it all again. | Adrienne 8th Grade Copyright 2005 Listed 10/05/2006Poem "recognized for creative excellence" by School District of Lee County, Ft. Myers, FL |
