Keeping the Honor

Hot rain falling on a war,
peace sits hard on a heart,
fists tense from hitting the air
bitter bitter bitter for the fight.

Having watched the confusion ferment to anger
her arms tiring under the weight of the picket,
one lonely protester drops her sign.
she bends to retrieve her argument, and in the glass of the puddle
sees the history of two hundred years shining.
droplets of men and women clothed in uniforms reflect back at her
the freedom of her resistance
echoes unchained in the wetness of their eyes.

Cocked and loaded
the barrels of their guns were greased with her freedom,
the explosive power of demurring millions fueled the fire.

She abandons her cry for another, their protest
the hot rain of this war washing warm with this truth
and opposing stolen liberties and lost rights,
fighting against those who forget
the original challenge and its heroes.
