Homeless Viet Nam Vetcountry as flag
Inside Yourself
Deep Within the dream
The waiting for the Past
To catch you up and come again

Behind Your eyes
The kindness still shows through
The nightmares where you walked
The spectral jungles you can’t lose

The Man, the Boy
Brave Soldier, child of Whom…
Marched off to play at war
And came home dead, his heart a tomb

Author's Note:
This is based on a man I used to see in the Chicago “Loop” who’d sit on a briefcase
on one of the bridges over the Chicago River looking at the sidewalk and holding
limply onto a cardboard sign that said “HOMELESS VIET NAM VET”. I wrote it after
packing a lunch for him as usual and he was no longer to be found in his usual spots.
It bothered me so that I had to write this to exorcise the concern as to his health
and whereabouts. I hope he’s somewhere safe and getting help.
