Fragile Futures country as flag
My brother was not so brave
when war was on the rise.
The stars that grace Old Glory
weren’t shining in his eyes.
He joined for other reasons
than duty, God and home,
perceiving nothing beautiful
in a future carved in stone.

He joined to stop the fingers
from wagging in his face,
and the fear he would be sent
to the Big Pen in disgrace.
Yes, he joined for other reasons
than duty, God and home,
perceiving nothing beautiful
in a future carved in stone.

But, not that band of brothers
whose young hearts beat with pride.
They saw a cause worth fighting
as we buried those who died
for a better world some day,
for duty, God and home,
perceiving nothing beautiful
in a future carved in stone.

They watched their brothers die,
their futures stuffed in bags,
toe-tagged… shattered… hidden
beneath too many flags,
but enough to keep them fighting
for duty, God and home,
perceiving nothing beautiful
in a future carved in stone.
