To Wear the American Uniformcountry as flag
To wear the American Uniform
Upon a hill I stand alone,
Nothing broken, nothing shown.
The battered world goes on around me,
And oh! The sadness I do see.
A soldier here, a soldier there,
Shrapnel shells everywhere.
Such madness beneath the sun,
A bloody war has just begun.

In my trench I lie in fright,
I know this battle I cannot fight.
It is of home that I do miss,
My children laughing, a gentle kiss.
It is my family that I must part,
Thinking of them tortures my heart.

Everywhere I see the dead,
This hurting pain lives on in my head.
That’s all I see day and night,
Through harsh times and bloody fights.
We see the horror we hear the noise,
But to fight for our country was our choice.
Maybe it’s right and maybe its wrong,
But on this deserted road, we walk on.

To protect our families that we do love,
To receive great honor from the god above.
There is no gift, there’s no delight,
There’s what to do and that’s to fight.
We fight with honor, we fight with pride,
Not letting show the fear inside.

To sleep in mud, to shoot off guns,
To kill our enemies is not much fun.
To trudge through swamps is hard to bare,
The American uniform is what we wear.
I was taught to always stand my ground,
And ignore the sadness that I have found.

And when this war comes to an end,
War will still live on in my head.
For the horror that came to me,
Is the horror I will always see.

But when this war is done and over,
I will still remain an American soldier.
