Play Ball

They never would let me play ball
In many ways more than just one
Writing some thirty years now
With my pen’s voice, never heard sung

This movie was made, when I had hardly arrived
Our world was a wonderful place
For so little would change, for another ten years
Even politicians wouldn’t risk, loosing face

Such wonderful memories are here to see
Of the only sport that was ever of concern to me
Like Lou Gehrig’s Mother, I find it true
Could there be, “So many people with nothing better to do”?

WOW, the real, Babe Ruth and Gary Cooper we see
And music that will last, eternally
“I’ll Be Loving You Always”
A song, which rings so true to me

Irving Berlin and I
Shall always remain
Me a writer of LOVE
Him with real fame

Once again I hear it said
You can do anything
If you try hard enough
Even things you dread

So I continue to write
Knowing it’s not likely to be
A published work
That our world ever sees

I’m in need of a, “Home Run”
That’s not really likely to be
Until someone truly understands
Willing enough to really help me

But, I have no fear
For I’m, content to know
I’ll get my, “Home Run”
For soon to my final home I’ll go

Base Ball will forever
Be remembered by me
As the sport of America
Land Of The Brave and The Free

True, they may have never allowed me to PLAY BALL
But I’ve pitched my best, answering a true writers call
Believing one day, when I’m “Home Free”, and all’s past
Forever beyond me, these writings will last.

Written while watching the movie,
“THE PRIDE OF THE YANKEES” made in,1942.
