The sergeant major is nearing the end of a yearlong deployment to Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, as the senior enlisted advisor for 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward), and his son is beginning a deployment as a landing support specialist with Combat Logistics Battalion 4. Aaron Narvol, a World War II Army veteran, received his Purple Heart Award nearly 70 years after being wounded by enemy fire in the spring of 1942 by Brig. Gen. Bud R. Jameson, Jr., commander of the 316th Expeditionary Sustainment Command. After decades of work on his own, the office of Sen. Robert Casey, Jr., was able to locate and process the proper award paperwork. Jaren Love, a constituent advocate for Casey presented Narvol with a letter of thanks from the senator for his service to the nation on January 24, 2012. Sather, and a family member pay their respect at the unveiling of a memorial honoring the sergeant Jan. 20, 2012, at Medina Annex at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas. The 12,000-pound memorial was created and displayed by civil engineers in Iraq to honor his leadership and bravery . . . and was sea-lifted from Sather Air Base, Iraq, to Lackland Air Force Base, Texas in March 2011.
