Army Sergeant William Meeuwsen - KIA in Iraq on November 23, 2005 ... Bronze Star Recipient

Sergeant William Meeuwsen

January 2006 . . . In the words of family friends, Jim and Ann Stewart...

"Our family of five (my wife and myself, a son and two daughters) has recently been saddened by news from old, yet close friends that their 24 year old son, Sergeant William Meeuwsen was killed in action near Baghdad on November 23, 2005.

Several days after being notified of Bill's death his parents (Mike and Theresa) called us from their home in Houston to advise us of the sad news. They honored us by considering us worthy of personal notification of Bill's death.

His heroism is documented in his Bronze Star citation, read at the military burial attended by Bill's family, senior military officers, and Oregon's governor. He died while saving the life of his critically wounded platoon leader.

Bill's first 11 years were in Washington State. For us, we remember Bill as a happy, fun loving little boy who appeared at our front door every Saturday morning to play with his friend Laura, our daughter. When Bill's family moved to Houston it wasn't the same neighborhood, particularly for Laura.

But not long after they moved, we journeyed to Houston for a visit, and about a year later our doorbell rang and there he stood back with his family for a visit. That was the last time we saw Bill . . . We remember Bill as a somewhat shy, timid little boy who was so impacted by 9-11 that he felt compelled to drop out of Texas A&M University in his Junior year to serve his country.

However, there was nothing timid about Bill's courage in combat. Though his parent's, sister, wife and large and extended family grieves for him, they have accepted his loss with incredible dignity and pride. They are proud of Bill, and rightfully so.

We are so honored to have known him."
